Broad unshaded roofs mean the solar surplus is real, and big single-storey floorplans with ducted heating and cooling mean the evening consumption is real too. A battery here is discharging into something substantial rather than trickling out to a couple of lamps and a television.
Measuring the evening properly
The number that sets battery capacity is your consumption between roughly 5pm and midnight. Guessing it is the most common way people end up with the wrong size. We use twelve months of interval data where you have it, because a summer evening with ducted cooling and a winter evening with ducted heating produce very different curves.
In Hoppers Crossing that number frequently supports 10kWh to 13kWh usable. Above 14kWh the federal rebate tapers and the marginal cost per kilowatt hour climbs, so unless there is an EV charging in the evening, that is generally the sensible ceiling.

Boards from the 1980s and 1990s here commonly have circuit breakers but no RCD protection on every final subcircuit. A battery installation is new work, which means AS/NZS 3000 requirements apply, and it also adds circuits plus usually a backup sub-board.
The result is that a board upgrade at $800 to $3,500 or more is a normal part of a Hoppers Crossing battery project rather than an exception. It is not a bad thing. It leaves the house ready for an EV charger or a heat pump hot water service later without repeating the same work and the same access cost.
Siting is the easy part here

Backup, Powercor and honest payback
Essential circuits backup is the usual configuration: fridge, lights, internet, a few power points, and the fan on a gas ducted heater so the house stays warm in a winter outage. Running full ducted cooling from a home battery is not realistic and we say so before purchase rather than after.
Hoppers Crossing is Powercor, and a battery inverter needs a fresh application under AS/NZS 4777.2 even where solar was approved earlier. On payback, expect 7 to 10 years against a 10 to 15 year life. Hoppers Crossing households with a large array and genuine ducted evening load tend to sit at the shorter end of that range, which is not something we can say for every suburb.
